Derby North Update:
I would like to provide you with an update on how the heavy rainfall is impacting the Derby city area. We currently have 23 flood alerts and 32 flood warnings in place across the East Midlands, including a Flood Alerts for the Lower Derwent in Derbyshire and a Flood Warning for the River Derwent at Allestree Ford Lane Bridge and Darley Abbey Park.
We are expecting these rivers to peak later today, at approximately 4:30pm. We have installed temporary defences at Chaddesden Sidings railway underpass, and we are working with Derby City Council to manage impacts across the city. Derby City Council have also deployed sand bags to appropriate locations. The river levels to this point have not been high enough to require the closure of the OCOR defence scheme flood gates. We are also aware of a report of flooding at West Meadows Industrial Estate, which we are investigating and will keep you updated on.
Environment Agency teams continue to work around the clock, both in our virtual incident rooms and on the ground. Our Field Teams are checking and operating flood defence structures, clearing debris from rivers and drainage channels, and carrying out additional pumping where appropriate. Community Information Officers will also be gathering further information in affected areas. We’re working closely with partner organisations to coordinate our response over the days and nights ahead.
We continue to encourage the public to remain vigilant, protect themselves from flooding and take action by keeping up to date with the latest flood information. We would welcome your support with this. We urge people to keep away from swollen rivers and not to drive through flood water. It is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float a car.
Your constituents can also keep up to date with the latest information at https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding or https://flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk/map and follow us on Twitter at @EnvAgencyMids.
